PROTOCOL FOR PACKING TAMARILLO
Optimum Transit Conditions:
Pulp Temperature: 3 to 4°C (optimal) or 7 to 100
C (depends on cultivar & region)
Relative Humidity: 90 to 95%
Freezing Injury Point: below 3°C
Approximate Storage Life:
- 5 to 8 weeks potential at suggested temperatures.
- Cool immediately after harvest to maintain quality
and shelf life.
Deterioration Factors:
- dehydration
- fungal rots
- Temperature Abuse
Harvesting & Storage:
This exotic fruit is often referred to as the "tree
tomato" and is gaining in popularity by consumers.
Post harvest storage and rapid transportation are required
to maximize retail shelf life. Whilst the recommended
temperatures are optimal, different cultivars and growing
regions can influence produce outcomes. As a result
some packers may currently use post harvest temperatures
ranging from 7 to 10 0 C. Before full introduction of
the LLS product an in house trial is recommended. Effective
post harvest treatment is a key component to prevent
bitter rot, a common disease of tamarillos. Systematic
pre and post harvest management control programs will
ensure that fungal rots are kept to a minimum. The introduction
of LLS Smartbags or Smartpunnets will ensure that dehydration
problems are substantially reduced. When using either
of these products it is essential to stabilise the pulp
temperature, place dry fruit into the carton liner,
then close the bag, secure outer carton lid then store
at recommended cool storage temperature. When using
Smartpunnets place dry fruit into the base of the punnet,
secure lid, make sure there is a minimum of 2 mm free
headspace between lid and fruit.
Harvesting & Storage:
- Harvest
- Wash- if applicable
- Hydrocool - incorporate post harvest chlorine treatment
at 85 to 100 ppm
- Pre chill for 24 hours at 7°C to 10°C
- Sort & Grade - Packhouse ambient temperature
at or below 14°C
- Pack into LLS Smartbag - then close bag (or Smartpunnet)
place into well vented cartons.
- Close carton and store on Pallet
- Re - Store in Coolroom at recommended temperature
