PROTOCOL FOR PACKING MELONS / HONEYDEW / CRENSHAW / CASABA

Optimum Transit Conditions:

Pulp Temperature: 7°C to 10°C
Relative Humidity: 85 % to 90%
Freezing Injury Point: -0.6°C

Approximate Storage Life:

  • 3 to 4 weeks.
  • Cool immediately after harvest to maintain quality and shelf life.

Deterioration Factors

  • Mould
  • Weight Loss.
Harvesting & Storage:

After harvest, melons should be chilled promptly to remove field heat. For maximise shelf life, ensure pulp temperature is stabilised at 7°C to 10°C, then pack into well vented cartons with LLS smartbag to maximise airflow during transit and storage. Remove excess air from the bag prior to closing. Ensure only dry produce is packed.

Critical Path Analysis:

  1. Harvest
  2. Sort & Grade
  3. Pre chill for 24 hours
  4. Pack produce into LLS smartbag - add ethylene sachet and then close bag
  5. Close carton and store on Pallet - do not shrink wrap cartons.
  6. Re - Store in Coolroom at 7°C
