LLS LINERS USED BY CO-OP FOR "NAKED
CUCUMBERS" FIRST Long Life Solution's
revolutionary packaging is to be launched by the Co-op
to market "naked cucumbers."
LLS technology allows the plastic shrink-wrap on whole
cucumbers to be removed and it is estimated the retailer
will save eight tonnes of plastic every year as a result.
This move is the latest of many that the Co-op has made
to reduce unnecessary packaging.
The whole cucumbers will continue to be delivered
to stores in cardboard boxes that will be lined with
LLS "Smart" liners. These liners have been proven to
reduce any negative impacts of removing the plastic
wrap such as possible moisture loss. The move to "naked'
cucumbers will not impact on shelf-life.
Andrew Wright, Chief Executive of Long Life Solutions
who produce Smart liners, said: "Long Life Solutions
has been proving its environmental technology for the
last five years with a focus on reducing emissions,
packaging and food waste. This initiative with the Co-op
is a market first where Smart technology is helping
to eliminate tonnes of packaging both from the supply
chain and the consumer."
Kate Jones, Head of Range Development at The Co-operative
Group commented: "The Co-op's commitment to environmental
improvement is long standing, and, as a consumer-owned
organisation, our members and customers help set our
responsible retailing agenda. Following a 12 week trial,
our customers have told us they are pleased to see that
we are taking steps to reduce packaging, and are more
than happy to buy their cucumbers without the usual
plastic wrap." |
